Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting
Basic skills
The purpose of the Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting is to provide training in the basic modes and areas of translation and interpreting. Therefore its teaching aims are to help students to acquire specific linguistic, cultural and instrumental skills and knowledge that will allow them to solve the types of problems that arise in the basic modes and areas of translation and interpreting.
- Demonstrate that they have the knowledge in the basic modes of translation and interpreting (written translation, screen translation, localisation, sight translation, liaison interpreting and consecutive interpreting in traditional and consolidated areas of professional practice (specialised and editorial translation) and in newer areas in this country, such as social mediation (translation and interpreting in institutes like hospitals, education centres, courts of law, etc.).

Professionally apply knowledge in the fields of the translation of specialised texts and those in the publishing sector (sight translation, liaison and consecutive interpreting) and in social and institutional translation and interpreting, and demonstrate the skills required for problem solving in the aforementioned areas.

Collect and interpret relevant data relating to the different modes and areas of translation and interpreting, in order to make judgements that include a reflection about situations of linguistic and cultural contact, the role of the translator and interpreter in society, and their social and ethical responsibilities.

Transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions in relation to the different modes and areas of translation and interpreting to a specialised and non specialised audience.

Apply the skills to take, with a high degree of autonomy, further courses for professional specialisation in the fields of specialised translation.

- To recognise the characteristics of the cultural and literary heritage of the societies of the languages and languages of study.
- Indicate the technological, terminological and information resources available in the field of translation and interpreting.
- Identify the methodological, theoretical, and historical approaches that have emerged around translation and interpreting.
- Indicate the ethical principles, values and procedures that govern the practice of translation and interpreting.
- Identify the agents, methods, processes and professional aspects of translation and interpreting and their implications in the workplace and entrepreneurship.

- Translate or interpret written or oral texts by applying linguistic, encyclopaedic and cultural knowledge, as well as technological and documentation resources, and justifying from a theoretical and methodological point of view the criteria and decisions adopted according to the assignment, the textual typology, the communicative context and the recipients.
