This type of knowledge needs to be made available within graduate studies as this is when the graduates in this ambit, particularly those working in public health, are in a position to have hypotheses and data for evaluation and verification, and therefore their motivation and general environment is optimum for assimilating the concepts of statistics and design that are difficult traditionally for undergraduates.
Our group, and the UAB, are pioneers within Spain as regards teaching such material.
We began in 1977 with a distance course in Biostatistics that was complemented with two attendance-based phases and a final exam on-site at the university campus.
These studies were gradually consolidated in the field of public health within Spain. In this period, supplementary courses were added in advanced statistics, computer tools and statistical packages, these latter being taught in-class in the old Mathematical Psychology Laboratory, which is now the Applied Statistics and Modelling Laboratory.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Statistics was approved in the 1993/94 academic year. This allowed studentsdepending on their needsto choose individual courses from within the programme or else to register for the Diploma in its entirety, consisting of obligatory and optional modules.
The Masters Degree in Research Methodology in Health Sciences was authorised in the 1999/2000 academic year; this has been offered up to the present. It allows studentsagain, depending on their intereststo choose individual courses from within the programme to take take the full Diploma and, once this has been obtained, to continue their study until obtaining the masters degree. The masters degree programme saw the incorporation of Professor Miguel Delgado, Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, a leading Spanish expert in design within in the health sector.
Our masters degree and the continuous training programme in Research Methodology in Health Sciences (which combines distance learning with a certain degree of attendance-based participation), is now a point of reference with Spain, as evidenced by its considerable history and by the great number of students who have enrolled.
The motivation of most students who are currently enrolled is to obtain solid methodological training in order to join an applied-research team and/or in order to write a doctoral thesis.
Career opportunitiesEssentially, it allows accreditation of methodological competence in order to applied research centres and groups within the health sphere.
Second, these skills are highly valued by the pharmaceutical industry and other companies within the healthcare sector.
UAB masters and graduate diplomas may include or facilitate external academic internships in companies or institutions in order to help the student to achieve a level of expertise that facilitates the insertion or promotion in the workplace.
For this study programme non-curricular (optional) internships are possible:
As a UAB student, you have access to the University occupation portal, the Occupability Service, through which you can participate in selection processes for non-curricular practices as well as getting a contract. In both cases, you need to sign up to the Nexus application.
