The field of diagnostic imaging techniques in cardiology has been widened in recent years by the incorporation of two new modes: cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and cardiac computed tomography (CT). Both techniques have been commonly used in radiology since the eighties, but never had a prominent role in cardiology until computer technology advanced sufficiently to reduce the time needed to obtain images, which is crucial in the case of an organ that is in continuous movement, like the heart.

CMR began in the early nineties and became a useful diagnostic tool in various areas of cardiac pathology, though it served to complement other explorations. However, since it was shown in 2000 to provide unique information on the tissue of ischemic cardiac muscle, this technique has become prominent in cardiological diagnosis processes.

CT is more recent, dating back to the 2000s but, once validated, it was adopted more rapidly than CMR, probably because it also offers unique information, namely non-invasive coronary angiography, which can often replace the use of probes in the heart chambers.

Recently, scientific committees representing the specialisations that are directly involved made recommendations for the training of professionals in these techniques. These, however, only contemplated the purely technical aspects of explorations, assessing practitioners' skills in terms of the number carried out, and ignoring knowledge of the physiopathological and radiological foundations and the ability to integrate the explorations in a clinical context.

All this has led us to offer this master's programme at the UAB, on Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Techniques in Cardiology, whose theoretical modules focus on three aspects: firstly, the physiopathological bases of heart disease, its clinical manifestations and conventional diagnostic techniques, secondly, radiological aspects that are basic, physical and related to clinical practice, and thirdly, presenting and discussing clinical case studies to learn the role of each technique in the process of cardiological diagnosis. The practical modules involve tutor-supervised CMR and CT explorations, image analysis and report-writing, all using cutting-edge cardiovascular exploration equipment and applications.

Classes are normally in Catalan, but Spanish can be used if there are non-Catalan speaking students.

Career opportunities

Clinical posts in diagnostic imaging, in cardiology or radiology departments, as a healthcare team member or as a section head.

Internships

UAB masters and graduate diplomas may include or facilitate external academic internships in companies or institutions in order to help the student to achieve a level of expertise that facilitates the insertion or promotion in the workplace.

For this study programme non-curricular (optional) internships are possible:

  • Non-curricular
As a UAB student, you have access to the University occupation portal, the Occupability Service, through which you can participate in selection processes for non-curricular practices as well as getting a contract. In both cases, you need to sign up to the Nexus application.
