We present the Master’s Degree in Lifelong Learning in Interventional Cardiology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, through which we offer the opportunity to undertake both theoretical and practical training in interventional cardiology over a period of two years.
The master’s programme will be delivered across three centres: Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, and Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, all of which are affiliated with the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The haemodynamics units of these three hospitals are comprehensive percutaneous intervention units, where virtually all conditions encountered in daily cardiac care are managed, including coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, and congenital heart disease. These units are accredited by the Spanish Society of Cardiology to provide training in interventional cardiology.
In addition, these units actively participate in numerous research studies, both their own and in collaboration with other national and international groups.
The aim of the master’s programme is to achieve comprehensive theoretical and practical training in the field of coronary intervention, fulfilling the requirements jointly established by the Section of Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology of the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SHCI) and the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), in order to obtain accreditation in coronary intervention.
The programme includes a theoretical component covering all areas of knowledge involved in this subspecialty. The curriculum is based on EAPCI recommendations and will be delivered through weekly clinical sessions taught by the haemodynamics unit team at our centre.
The development of the master’s programme has a fundamentally practical orientation. A core objective of the course is the progressive acquisition of the practical skills required by Spanish and European scientific societies, in order to meet the criteria established for accreditation. Training will consist, on the one hand, of commented reviews of daily clinical cases and, on the other, of progressive participation in both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the supervision of a tutor, a staff physician of the unit. Accreditation recommendations established by the EAPCI and the SHCI of the Spanish Society of Cardiology will be followed.
Furthermore, throughout the master’s programme, a supervised research project will be carried out, culminating in the presentation of a Master’s Final Project. Its objective is to train students in the tools of scientific research and the dissemination and publication of knowledge.
