Cancer patients and the challenge that they represent for society make it essential that all levels and ambits of health be brought into play for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Global, coordinated strategies are required within the health system. But at the same time, all of this has a very high social and healthcare cost.
The World Cancer Report indicates that the disease has has now become a significant problem for public health in developing countries, equalling the effect it has in the developed world. According to this report, rates of cancer may rise by up to 50% until 2020, which would represent 15 million new cases. In short, cancer is on the rise.
A significant component of cancer care is highly specialised care, both as this concerns the incorporation of new diagnostic techniques, such as PET/CT, or cytogenic and molecular studies, as in case management, healthcare continuity, and the psycho-social and emotional support of patients in their own environment. For this reason, cancer-patient care requires professionals who are specialists and fully involved in all the phases of the process.
Following this line, the role of oncological nursing has also evolved, broadening its knowledge in a way that is parallel to the evolution of the general nursing profession and to technological and instrumental developments, risk-factor awareness and health education, as well as reflecting a growing connection with the importance of emotional support and assistance as a tool for attending to patients and their families.
We strongly believe in maintaining a master's degree in oncological nursing because of the need for training, the increasing demand for this ambit within our master's degree programmeand for the professional possibilities that this course offers students on its completion.
Career opportunities- Form part of an oncology-service team: in-patients units, day hospitals, external consultancy.
- Lead nursing care as a key member in all phases of the oncological process (primary, secondary and tertiary care).
- Manage healthcare continuity throughout the entire course of the illness.
- Lead specialist nursing consultancies in cancer-patient care.
