PhD in Economics, Management and Organization (Business Economics)

Introduction

The PhD in Economics Management and Organization (DEMO) is an interuniversity PhD programme resulting from the collaboration between the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Public University of Navarra and the University of the Balearic Islands. It has a strong international flavour and is highly committed to the generation of socially relevant knowledge that allows for improvement in current business management and its degree of social commitment.

The PhD is aimed at training people interested in a professional career either within the university or outside. In an increasingly competitive world, both business leaders and government agencies have to become more rigorous in their analysis in order to improve the validity of their decisions and communicate them so as to involve people from different educational and cultural ambients.

This programme develops a series of instruments and opportunities to improve these capacities. However, the programme also offers a slow pathway for those working outside the university and tries to establish collaborations with companies in the preparation of the doctoral thesis so that this may take place within the companies themselves (industrial doctorates).

Candidate profile

The following specific requirements of the programme aim to establish a PhD student profile that maximises the chances of producing a doctoral thesis of the required quality within the specified time period.

  • Thorough knowledge of the basic concepts and tools for conducting competitive research in the field of business management and administration and economics of organisations. Accordingly, it is an essential requirement to have taken a research-oriented university master's degree in the field of business administration and economics.
  • The working language of this PhD programme is English, which makes it an essential requirement to provide proof of English level B2.1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Objectives and justification

The PhD in Economics Management and Organization (DEMO) aims to prepare PhD candidates in three years who are able to carry out internationally competitive research in areas related to business administration. The programme is also committed to the generation of socially useful research. The research therefore has to deal with real, current problems in the business sphere that surrounds us and has to try to improve business management practice and social commitment, as well as the industrial policies of the government.
