Walk-in vaccination point at the UAB campus

Starting on 8 September, the UAB will open a walk-in coronavirus vaccination point at the Plaça Cívica's cinema hall. The vaccination point will be open for people over 12 who have not yet received a vaccine or are due for their second shot.

Media beautifies the image of coronavirus

According to a study by the Instituto de Radio Televisión Española and the UAB conducted during the COVID-19 lockdown, black and white images of SARS-CoV-2 make the virus seem more infectious. The results, published on PLoS ONE, demonstrate that colour and three-dimensional images of SARS-CoV-2 in the media has favoured the perception of the virus as a beautiful, but not quite realistic or contagious virus.

Treatment with gene therapy of a new rat model of Morquio A

   A research team from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) has generated the first rat model recapitulating all disabling alterations experienced by patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA, also known as Morquio A disease. The team has developed a gene therapy that fully corrects the severe whole-body alterations in the rat model after a single intravenous viral vector administration.

A new study by the ICTA-UAB establishes that the population density of hunter-gatherer groups was reduced where they depended heavily on meat to survive. The research reveals important links between growing season length, diet composition and population density.

A potential therapeutic target to treat cerebral blood alterations

An international group of researchers, led by the UAB, identified the presence of the fat sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) in the meninges, and described its key role in the proper functioning of cerebral blood vessels. The study also suggests its involvement in the elimination of waste substances from the brain. The finding will help develop new drugs for the modulation of cerebral blood flow in those diseases in which it is altered.

The International Welcome Days (IWD) for the first semester of the 2021/22 academic year will take place from 13 to 17 September 2021. During the week there will be various activities, workshops and talks to help international students get to know the UAB better.

ECIU micro-modules now open for registration

Micro-modules are offered by the different universities making up the ECIU University and, in contrast to the challenge-based modules, are short training sessions allowing students to delve deeper into the United Nations 11 SDGs. Students can acquire additional problem-solving skills and strategies, or sign up to learn a foreign language.

The UAB opens a call for mobility grants and incorporation of international talent

The Spanish Ministry for Universities has conferred onto the UAB a total of 17.5 million euros to be destined for Margarita Salas grants, aimed at training young PhD graduates and the requalification of civil servants, and for the María Zambrano grants for the attraction of international talent. Deadline for applications is 30 September.

"I'ld like to help give opportunities to those in situations of inequality"

Júlia Ruiviejo is the student with the highest entrance score at the UAB this year, with a 13.92 over 14. She will be studying the double degree in Political Science and Public Management + Sociology. She would like to work towards a world in which everyone has the same opportunities, and is concerned about the inequalities and climate crisis we are currently facing.
